About Us

Own-it North offers free intellectual property advice for creative businesses.

Welcome to our Northern service, a pilot project launched May 2008. Own-it North is funded by the NWDA, and delivered by the Northern Edge group of universities through Salford University, in partnership with Skillset and London College of Communication (part of the University of the Arts London ).

Our Mission

To provide creative people and businesses based in the North with the relevant knowledge, advice and support to protect, exploit and value their intellectual property and take full advantage of the capital contained therein, the resulting business developments and growth.

We offer a range of services, from basic to specialist support, through online and face-to face seminars, workshops and, where appropriate, surgeries with intellectual property lawyers. We work with a network of IP advisors including lawyers and specialists at various trade associations associated with the creative industries in the UK.

Background

Own-it North is a pilot project which will test the potential for a longer term service and has been adapted from the existing London based service.

Own-it, Intellectual Property Advice for Creative Businesses, was originally devised by the London Development Agency as a result of research undertaken by the Mayor's Creative Industries Commission and the University of the Arts, London who now deliver and manage the initiative. Own-it was launched in September 2004.

Own-it North represents a development of existing work and projects conducted by the Northern Edge group of universities working closely with the creative and digital industries and draws upon research conducted by Skillset and the Northern Edge into the needs of the sector.

See partners page for more information on our working links with other leading organisations.
