1. MAKING MONEY FROM MUSIC

You've made the music, now how do you get hold of the royalties, and what are your rights? This Own It event will look at how the business works and how royalties are collected when the music you've created is played on the radio, in a cab, or at a gig and whether the payment and the collection systems differ if its used on TV, film or adverts.

There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get answers from the people who have been there and done it and who can help you get what is rightfully yours.

2. OWN IT EVENTS PLANNED FOR LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL 2005

Building on the success of the 2004 Festival, which saw 150,000 people at over 70 exhibitions, events, seminars, screenings, lectures, and parties all over London, this year's London Design Festival is growing bigger and bigger.

After breaking for summer, Own It will be back in September with five special different FREE events as part of the London Design Festival (http://www.londondesignfestival.com), which takes place from September 15-30th 2005.

My Name, My Face, My Image, My Reputation? will be the first of five special Own It events throughout the festival, which will look at how to protect and value your brand. Check the events page and watch this space for more information. http://www.own-it.org/events

3. FREE SAMPLE CONTRACTS NOW AVAILABLE FROM OWN IT

Our comprehensive set of legal contracts and agreements are now live on the Own It website, http://www.own-it.org and available to registered users for FREE download. Registered users can download a maximum of 10 contracts. (Recently increased from 5).

The free-of-charge legal template documents cover a wealth of issues that might arise for the small creative business: from simple copyright, visual artists' commission agreements and production agreements to more complex media rights, music video agreements between artist and record company and commissioning agreements for writers.

Over 300 documents have been created in plain English and are the same as those that a solicitor would normally charge hundreds of pounds to create. They can be used repetitively and customised by individuals to incorporate logos and headings, personalised cover pages or passed on to a solicitor to reduce legal costs.

The free contracts make a welcome addition to the existing free legal advice and free seminars that Own It already provides to enable creative people to make the most of their ideas. Please note: these Own It templates are provided to help you understand what an IP contract is all about.

You should always consult a lawyer before issuing a contract. These templates may not cover all your particular issues. For advice on IP contracts or any other IP related matter visit http://www.own-it.org/advice/
