Back stage: The IP behind the curtain

Published 01.05.09 at 10:00

Although the spotlight is normally on the actors on the stage, it takes collaboration between many specialists to deliver a theatre performance. This podcast focuses on the people back stage, such as the set designer, the make-up artist, the costume and lighting designer, the composer and the musicians. It discusses: What rights you have when you are working behind the curtains of a theatre. What clauses you should be aware of in your contract. Whether, as an author, you have the right to object to derogatory treatment of your work, to be named as the author of the play, and to receive royalties for its use. What happens when the play goes on tour, and whether you can use your designs or ideas for another production.

Speakers include Sue Buckmaster, artistic director of Theatre-Rites and the fourth generation of theatre practitioners in her family. She has worked with the National Theatre, RSC, the Young Vic, Sadler's Wells, the South Bank Centre, the Lyric Hammersmith, Complicite, Leicester Haymarket, Opera Circus, Graeae, Tara Arts, Theatre Centre, Pop-Up Theatre, Roundabout TIE, the Crafts Council and the Puppet Centre. She has an MA in Contemporary Theatre Practice from Essex University, which included a thesis on The Psychoanalytic Study of the Power of the Puppet.

Please note that this podcast discusses the legal position in the UK at the time of publication. It provides general information only but is not to be regarded as legal advice. You must take advice from a specialist lawyer in relation to your specific circumstances. Further, you should seek additional legal advice when dealing with parties based in other parts of the world or works originating from other parts of the world as the legal position may vary.
