Click here for Nico Macdonald's write-up on this event, including further reading and listening, key themes and points, and outlines of the four panelists' presentations (based on the presentations rather than the actual talks). A recording of the event is being edited and will be made available as a podcast in due course.

Event 20/07/2005

Making money from music  took place in July 2005 at Turnmills in Clerkenwell Road, London.

The event was put on to help musicians discover how to get hold of their royalties, and what their rights are once they've made the music.

The popular own-it music event gets under way

We looked at how the music business works and how royalties are collected when the music created by a musician is played on the radio, in a cab, or at a gig. We also discussed whether the payment and the collection systems differ if its used on tv, film or adverts.

A question and answer session at the end created a lively debate and gave the people who've  'been there and done it', the chance to help musicians get what is rightfully theirs.

Speakers included, moderator, Francis Shaw,  an experienced composer of a wide variety of music. Francis contributed music and orchestrated much of the score for A Room With A View and composed music for The Fourth Protocol, and scored the Oscar nominated Swedish film 'EVIL', which was showing in the UK while the event took place.

Plus David Arnold, an award winning composer who has written music for a huge range of top films and tv programmes including the James Bond films, Stoned and Little Britain.

Ian Wright, Chairman of Reverb Music Ltd and Member MPA Pop Publishers Committee and David Stopps, MD of Friars Management and MMF Council Member, also spoke at the packed-out event.

Reaching a bigger audience - 26/09/2005

This Own-it event took place in September at London College of Fashion and looked at what happens from a legal point of view, when you want to get your product manufactured, or are approached by someone who wants to manufacture it for you.

We also covered licensing, royalties and manufacture, while delegates also discovered:

- What a licence is?
- How to negotiate a licence?
- Whether you can ask a licensee for an up-front payment?
- How much should the royalty be?
- Whether a royalty decreases (or increases) with volume?
- How to find and choose a licensee?
- What the dangers of licensing are, and how can they be minimised?
- What a licensing agreement looks like and what should be looked out for?

The speaker for this event was Margaret Briffa, senior partner of IP law firm Briffa (www.briffa.com)

Margaret helps companies use their intellectual property to grow their business. She has been involved in many court cases shaping the law in this area and has also pioneered ways on making intellectual property advice easily accessible to all.
