Public Lending Right (PLR)

Authors have a right to payment under the government-funded PLR Scheme for the free lending out of their books by public libraries.

All that is required is to apply to the PLR office for registration. Payments are made once a year based on how often books have been borrowed.  In February 2009 24,000 authors (including writers, illustrators, editors and translators) received a payment.  Book loans data is supplied to PLR by a representative sample of public libraries from every region of the UK.
